Abstract:
»The limitations called up by the first equivalence are demonstrated in the next chapter, by Elisa Groff , titled ‘Sexual violence in female martyrdoms’, which moves discussion from ‘the Roman world’ as customarily understood to what is conventionally known today as ‘Byzantium’. The chapter moves discussion on in temporal terms, too, like the chapter by Vihervalli, to the fifth century ce . It also picks up on the threads of a discussion of ‘sexual violence’ rather than, specifically, ‘rape’ in the 1997 volume in the context both of the scholarly environment of the 1990s and in the context of conceptions of sexual violence, sexualized bodies and sexual health of the early twenty-first century«
